College of Arts & Sciences
The College of Arts and Sciences encompasses the School of Education, School of Nursing, Dental School of Orthodontics, Divisions of Humanities, Science and Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Naval Science. In addition to undergraduate programs, the College also houses the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.), and the Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree programs. The M.A.T. offers nine majors: Art, Computer Education, Educational Leadership, Elementary Education, English, integrated learning with educational technology, mathematics, music, and reading. Majors Majors are offered in Biology, Chemistry, Communication, Computing Sciences, Elementary Education, English, Environmental Studies, French, Geography, History, Humanities, Marine Science, Mathematics, Nursing, Philosophy, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Spanish. Preprofessional programs are available to students interested in law, medicine, pharmacy, dental medicine and veterinary medicine. Dual degree programs are also available in engineering. Students majoring in the fields offered by the College of Arts and Sciences must complete the core curriculum, (link) the degree requirements for a B.A., B.S. or B.S.N degree, and the requirements of the major. Students enrolled in any College of Arts and Sciences discipline who plan to teach on the secondary level must also complete the professional education courses listed under “Education. ” Track for Physical Education “Exercise Science” Jacksonville University, responding to the growing health and fitness market in the U.S., has added a new track in the Physical Education Major, which is called Exercise Science. Some of the classes required for Exercise Science are also requirements for the University’s two existing Physical Education programs - sports administration and physical education teacher track. The actual science involved in proper exercise warrants a degree program. Student interest, according to Dr. Gail Maetozo, Professor of Physical Education and coordinator of the Department of Physical Education, turned out to be the deciding factor. “The department knew we had to take a serious look at an exercise science track when we were getting alot of requests in a month asking about it,” Maetozo said. “This major is designated for students who plan to become trainers and strength coaches, and those who want to go into health and wellness areas such as health clubs, commercial fitness centers, hospital wellness centers, and even cruise lines.” In addition to the University’s regular core courses, students will be required to take 52 hours of study in courses such as chemistry, kinesiology, substance abuse, nutrition and physiology of exercise. School of Nursing and Dental School of Orthodontics The Lazzara Health Sciences Building The center includes the state-of the-art rehabilitation-teaching laboratory for the School of Nursing. The Dental School of Orthodontics will meet a growing national need for certified orthodontics. Undergraduate programs Academic excellence Dr. June Main, a much-honored Professor of Education, has now been recognized by her Jacksonville University colleagues. She was named JU Professor of the Year for 2002-03 at the annual Faculty Recognition Dinner and 2002 CASE (Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and the Council for Advancement and the Support of Education) Florida Professor of the Year The Professor of the Year announcement was one of several major awards presented at the 2005 annual celebration of faculty excellence, which was. Jeane Richards, Assistant Professor of Nursing. Dr. Raymond Oldakowski, Professor of Geography, was honored with the Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Professional Activities. Mr. Eric Thomas, Professor of History, received the Award for Excellence in University Service. Dr. Julie Brannon, Assistant Professor of English received the Award for Excellence in Teaching. Faculty Recognition and Milestone Recent Faculty Accomplishments Dr. Sherri Jackson (Psychology) has just published an innovative textbook she has authored on Research Methods and Statistics: A Critical thinking Approach. Dr. Ray Oldakowski (Geography) recently published an article in the Journal of Geography. “Activities to Develop a Spatial Among Introductory Geography Students”, and “Does the South end in North Florida” was recently published in the Florida Geographer. Dr. Steve MacIsaac (Political Science) recently published an article in the Journal Philippine Studies, “The Struggle for Economic Development for the Phillipine Common Wealth, 1935-1940”. Dr. Steve Browder (Physics) was the previous CASE (Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and the Council for Advancement and the Support of Education) Florida Professor of the Year and is now working on revisions to the “Infrared handbook of Optical Materials.” Dr. Pam Rillstone (Nursing) co-authored the study “Managing the Reemergence of Anguish: Pregnancy after a Loss due to Anomalies” Dean A. Quinton White published "Governance in the Twenty-First-Century University: Approaches to Effective Leadership Strategic Management.” Theory to practice JU Physics graduate Robert Bernath spent 11 weeks on a research team studying the generation of highenergy x-ray radiation with high intensity femtosecond laser pulses at the distinguished Max Born Institute in Berlin, Germany.
