Track for Physical Education “Exercise Science”

Jacksonville University, responding to the growing health and fitness market in the U.S., has added a new track in the Physical Education Major, which is called Exercise Science.

Some of the classes required for Exercise Science are also requirements for the University’s two existing Physical Education programs - sports administration and physical education teacher track. The actual science involved in proper exercise warrants a degree program. Student interest, according to Dr. Gail Maetozo, Professor of Physical Education and coordinator of the Department of Physical Education, turned out to be the deciding factor.

“The department knew we had to take a serious look at an exercise science track when we were getting alot of requests in a month asking about it,” Maetozo said. “This major is designated for students who plan to become trainers and strength coaches, and those who want to go into health and wellness areas such as health clubs, commercial fitness centers, hospital wellness centers, and even cruise lines.”

In addition to the University’s regular core courses, students will be required to take 52 hours of study in courses such as chemistry, kinesiology, substance abuse, nutrition and physiology of exercise. For more information, contact the Department of Physical Education at 256-7226.

School of Nursing and Dental School of Orthodontics

The center is the home the home of JU’s rapidly growing School of Nursing, which will be on the second floor, and the Dental School of Orthodontics is located on the first floor.

The center includes the state-of the-art rehabilitation-teaching laboratory for the School of Nursing. The Dental School of Orthodontics will meet a growing national need for certified orthodontics.
