The College of Fine Arts Website:

Exceptional opportunities
As early as your freshman year you can benefit from hands-on learning opportunities, something that is hard to duplicate at larger universities. Art majors show their work in the Alexander Brest Museum and Gallery; dance students attend American College Dance Festival and perform at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.; music majors compose, direct and perform in groups that travel to major cities like New York and London; and theater students write and produce plays, perform in major productions, take the stage in children’s theater, and complete internships.

Personalized programs
Acceptance into JU’s programs of art, music, dance or theatre arts requires satisfactory completion of an audition or presentation of a portfolio. As you study here, we review your work and encourage your success every step of the way. This personalized approach is made possible by our low student-to-faculty ratio and a collaborative approach.

Wonderful Resources
JU’s College of Fine Arts has a wide array of resources and top-notch facilities for its students. The Phillips Fine Arts Building features three classrooms, 18 teaching studios, two large rehearsal rooms, an electronic music studio, a recital hall, and a piano/computer lab.

Music majors can take advantage of the piano/computer lab in the Phillips Fine Arts Building. This lab is comprised of a group of networked computers which are linked to keyboards so that students can compose on the fly, or collaborate with other students in the room or their professor. Students perform in Terry Concert Hall, a 400-seat architectural award-winning hall with acoustics unmatched in this region.

Art students not only have the Alexander Brest Museum of Art at their disposal, but a roomy studio in which to create and a glass blowing lab. For those interested in computer art and animation, we offer a high-tech art imaging lab.

The Alexander Brest Dance Pavilion is a state-of-the-art, double-level facility uniquely designed for dance and ballet activities. And Swisher Auditorium, a 550-seat fully equipped proscenium theatre, sets the stage for many of our hands-on Theatre Arts performances.

Cultural Events
JU’s busy cultural events calendar brings all the Fine Arts programs to life, offering students the chance to participate in musical and theatrical productions and art shows, and to attend performances by various visiting artists. The Division of Music offers a variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles that provide professional training and excellent experiences for music majors and for all students in the University. Theater Arts students work on a number of productions throughout the school year, and dancers have the opportunity to perform in the annual First Coast Nutcracker production and to attend American College Dance Festival Workshops.
