Psychology

Program Description
Psychology is a science, an academic discipline, and a time-honored profession. This tripartite nature endows the discipline with a uniquely multifaceted nature. As scientists, psychologists are concerned with the careful and systematic observation of behavior and the collection, analysis, and interpretation of empirical data. As academics, psychologists deal in the abstract realm of theoretical interpretation and ethical controversies. As professionals, psychologists are dedicated to improving the lives and preserving the dignity of people.

The psychology department at Jacksonville University offers a rigorous undergraduate curriculum designed to prepare students for graduate training in psychology or related fields such as counseling, social work, cognitive science, rehabilitation counseling, or occupational therapy. The undergraduate psychology major, like other liberal arts programs, may be applied to a wide range of career choices. Pairing psychology with a major in biology, marketing, management, or sociology opens the door to unique employment and/or graduate opportunities.

Curriculum Overview
After completing a required core of introductory courses (including introductory psychology, statistics, and research methods), students select from a variety of mid-level courses that review the major areas of research and applied psychology. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in undergraduate internships and independent study research projects. Exceptional students may complete a senior honors project and graduate with departmental honors in psychology.

Internships
Students in the JU psychology program have participated in internships in a wide variety of local social programs, including the V.A. Outpatient Mental Hygiene Clinic, Hope Haven Clinic for Children and Families, Daniel Memorial Home for Children, Hubbard House of Jacksonville, Jacksonville Child Guidance Clinic, Memorial Regional Rehabilitation Program, The Bridge Program of North East Florida, Drug Court of Duval County, Clay County Behavioral Mental Health Program, Mental Health Resource Center of Jacksonville, Walt Disney World College Program in Human Resources, Prudential Insurance Human Resources Department, Jacksonville Office of the State Attorney, Vector Marketing Corporation, Children's Crisis Center, Department of Children and Families, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Pace Center for Girls, State Attorney's Office Diversionary Program, and the Magnolia Project.

Undergraduate Research
Psychology majors have also completed undergraduate research projects and have given presentations at several professional conferences. Recent student research projects have included Early Schooling for Juvenile Delinquents, Predictors of Alcohol Use in College Students, Psychological Tests and Measures, Self-Esteem and Adjustment to Cancer, Strategies for Teaching Movement, and Tutoring Techniques for Disadvantaged Students.

Sponsored Student Activities
Psychology students who have earned a grade point average of at least 3.00 are eligible to join Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology. In addition to performing community service tasks, Psi Chi members typically attend and often present papers at psychology conferences.

Outcomes
The department has had success in sending qualified students to graduate, professional, and law schools. A number of JU psychology graduates who have pursued graduate training and earned their doctorates are currently practicing psychologists or hold academic positions at universities. Graduates have been successful in applying to graduate programs in such areas as counseling and clinical psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, experimental psychology, developmental psychology, and social work. Psychology majors not attending graduate school have also found a wide variety of rewarding careers. Some of their employers include Daniel Memorial, Hope Haven Children's Clinic & Family Center, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the Child Guidance Center.
