Frequently Asked Questions: When will the Datatel software be put on my computer? There are a couple of issues we are working on that affect when we install Datatel on work machines. The first is the reliability of the Datatel hardware. We want to be absolutely sure the servers are performing at the highest level before we start adding users. The second is the Single-Sign-On issue. Part of the selection criteria for Datatel was their indication that we would have a Single-Sign-On capability. This means you would sign on to your computer each morning as usual and never have to login to another program during your normal work process. The Single-Sign-On feature does not work as advertised and Datatel is working on a solution and have indicated the issue should be resolved by the end of May. Why does the change to Datatel take such a long time? All our current data, which is in numerous databases, has to be moved into Datatel. This effort is being done in steps with a verification process after each step. How much does the Datatel software cost and where did JU get the money to pay for it? The Datatel software is expensive, but very competitive when one looks at other possible solutions. JU was able to become a Datatel client thanks to a generous gift from a private donor. Why not keep or upgrade the software we currently use? Annual support for the current system will be terminated in December of 2006. What will Datatel give JU that we do not already have? Datatel is an integrated system, meaning that all data is centrally located and available, on a real-time basis to all users. The current system(s) used by JU are not integrated. Will there be a need to retain other software applications we currently use? Many systems, such as EMAS, SRN, Bi-Tech, and Raiser’s Edge can be replaced and will no longer needed once the conversion is completed. What else does JU gain as a result of this effort? Every business process on campus is being reviewed and improved, if necessary. Although this benefit is intangible, our efficiency and effectiveness should increase greatly.
