The University assesses student outcomes and factors that may affect student outcomes so that we have evidence upon which to base decisions about improving the campus experience.  Through the strategic and unit planning processes, we seek to identify those indicators that best measure our goals for student success.

Effective Fall 2003, the President issued a formal policy on assessment that describes the University's commitment to assessment and our expectations for faculty, staff, administration, and student participation in planning and evaluation.  It generally describes the administration of assessment at the University and the roles of various individuals and units in that administration.

The motivation behind assessment is to create a process of continual and institution-wide evaluation that results in improved educational programs, student services, and operations.

The University's goals for assessment are to:

  • measure institutional effectiveness.
  • identify improvements to be made that result in an improved overall student experience.
  • enhance the quality of decision-making in the University.
  • have budgets justified by assessment information.
  • allocate resources on the basis of plans.

This website provides a resource to faculty, staff, and administrators in evaluating their areas.  Links are provided to the AAHE Principles of Good Practice for assessing student learning, to the Association of Governing Board's statement on key indicators, to other university assessment websites, and to a wealth of Internet information.

The site also serves as documentation of the University's current assessment practices  and its comprehensive assessment plan.

For the upcoming academic year, forms and templates are available on this site.  In addition, guidelines are available to help units who are beginning to work on revising their plans, using the new strategic scorecard format.  Assessment will take place with academic departments and administrative departments according to a schedule approproved by the Planning and Assessment Team.
