The Association of Governing Boards promotes the use of ten key strategic indicators for higher education.  [Taylor, B.E., and Massy, N.F.  (1997).  Strategic Indicators for Higher Education, 1996, Princeton, NJ:  Peterson’s.]

The ten indicators that measure institutional health are:

  • Overall revenue structure
  • Overall expenditure structure
  • Excess of current fund revenue over current fund expenditures
  • Percent of freshman applicants accepted and percent of accepted freshmen who matriculate
  • Ratio of FTE students to FTE faculty
  • Institutional scholarship and fellowship expenditures as percent of total fees
  • Tenure status of FTE faculty
  • Percent of total FTE employees who are faculty
  • Estimated maintenance backlog as percent of total replacement value of physical plant
  • Percent of living alumni who have given at any time during the past five years

Overall Revenue Structure.Indicator:  sources of revenue; data expressed as percent of total.

Overall Expenditure Structure.Indicator:  Uses of funds; data expressed as percent of total.

Excess (Deficit) Of Current Fund Revenue Over Current Fund Expenditures. Indicator:  current fund balance as % of previous year’s fund balance.

Percent Of Freshman Applicants Accepted And Percent Of Accepted Freshmen Who Matriculate.Indicator:  Accepted freshmen as a percentage of total applicants; enrolling freshmen as a percentage of accepted freshmen.

Ratio Of Full-time Equivalent Students To Full-time Equivalent Faculty. Indicator:  number of FTE students divided by number of FTE faculty.

Institutional Scholarship And Fellowship Expenditures As Percent Of Total Fees.Indicator:  scholarship expenditures as percentage of fee income

Tenure Status Of Full-time Equivalent Faculty.Indicator:  Number of tenured full-time faculty divided by the number of full-time faculty positions.

Percent Of Total Full-time Equivalent Employees Who Are Faculty.Indicator:  Number of FTE faculty divided by number of FTE total employees.

Estimated Maintenance Backlog As Percent Of Total Replacement Value Of Physical Plant.Indicator:  Maintenance requirements divided by replacement value of general education facilities.

Percent Of Living Alumni Who Have Given At Any Time During The Past Five Years.Indicator:  Number of alumni giving divided by total living alumni.
